Drinking on a Disney Cruise

One question I frequently get asked is if Disney Cruise Line has a drink package. Sodas and juice are free at most locations on a Disney ship. Currently they do not offer alcoholic drinking packages with their cruises, and they recently updated their alcohol policy.  The new policy allows each adult to bring two bottles of wine OR a six-pack of beer on board with them.  At each port, you are allowed to bring on an additional six-pack or two more bottles of wine. (Side note: I could not find bottles of wine or bottled beer for sale anywhere on Castaway Cay! Since the island is owned by Disney, I guess that makes sense!)

You can purchase bottles of liquor in the sundries shop where you can purchase souvenirs, sunscreen, Dramamine, and other medications.  I was very surprised at the prices - and not in a bad way! You could purchase a standard-sized bottle of vodka or rum for $13.95+ tax each, but they hold it for you until the end of the cruise! They had a decent selection of full-sized bottles of liquors and wine and cordials. However, you can't take it to your cabin! Likewise, if you purchase liquor in a port, they will hold it for you until the end of the cruise. You can pick up any hard liquor on debarkation morning usually from 7-9 am.

They offered drinks at breakfast such as a Bloody Mary or Mimosa for $4.  You could also order a glass or bottle of wine with dinner.  And anywhere you wander around, you can get the drink of the day for about $6-7 dollars.  Not bad for mixed drinks. 

You CAN purchase a wine package on the ships though. In any of the main dining rooms, you can simply choose the package that fits your family. You could purchase a 3-night wine package on a 7-night cruise and have 3-bottles over the course of a week. You can share all three bottles or you can have two bottles open at once--one red and one white for example. Even better, the bottle will appear at your dinner the next evening at whichever main dining room or speciality dining venue where you're dining!  

You can also take the bottle back to your cabin for the evening. If you order a larger package than you can drink, you can even take up to two bottles off the ship with you at the end of the cruise!

A 15% gratuity will be added for the servicing of all wine packages.

There are also water packages you can purchase (6-pack or 12-pack of Dasani water or Evian waters for premium prices!) before you sail or onboard. Similarly, there are beer packages you can buy before you sail or onboard. These are 6-packs of 16 oz aluminum "bottles"with Miller Light, Coors Light, Bud Light and other American favorites. 

Another option is the Beer Mug beverage package! For $14.95, you get a glass souvenir beer mug that gets you a 21 oz beer for the 16 oz price anywhere on the ship! Even better, if you don't want to carry that mug around, any bartender can give you a beer token. When you're ready for your next beer, simply exchange the token for a clean glass with your next 21 oz beer! 

There is a bar district on each Disney ship where you can drink in any number of cool environments. Piano bar? Sure! Sports pub? Got it! And some of the bars host trivia or other fun adult activities.

We spent our day at Castaway Cay on the adult-only beach since we were travelling without children on this cruise.  Don't worry - the only "adult" thing about it is the lack of children.  Everyone is in a bathing suit and being decent - it's still Disney!  Bartenders did wander around on the beach to ensure anyone who wanted a drink had one. Laying in the sun all day, we were careful not to overdo it.

We went to a Mixology class on our Bahamas day and for $20/person got to make and sample 6 mixed drinks.  That was fun! Most sailings offer a number of these tastings. I've seen Mixology, Martini, Beer Tasting, Wine and Chocolate, Mojito and many more!

Whether you need a beer package or just an occasional fruity frozen drink, you can find what you want on a Disney ship!
